Many busy mums may read this and this that I’m crazy for even thinking about suggesting foster caring on top of their busy schedules. How on earth would you be able to care for another child on top of everything they have to do already?

There’s no pretending that starting to be foster parent is a huge decision and a huge responsibility, but it can actually be a career move – and most people don’t realise how lucrative it can be. Of course, this isn’t why someone should be a foster parent – it should be to make a difference in the life of a child. However, if you’re a working mum that has completely omitted the thought of foster caring because you simply don’t have enough time to take on the responsibility, this could change your mind…

Quitting your job to become a full time foster parent is actually a viable option. Foster parents receive a weekly income that often works out considerably above minimum wage, and can be a lot more if say you foster a sibling set. And what better job to have than changing the life on a young person that really needs you?

I’m not saying it’s an easy job, however. Foster parenting can be a challenging and demanding journey, as the children that are in the care system are often damaged emotionally which can lead to behavioural issues. But – it’s also one of the most rewarding things a person can do. If you’ve considered fostering a child before, here a few reasons why you should go for it…

You could make a real difference

Children in care who are able to bond with a foster parent are more likely to do perform better at school, form healthy and lasting relationships, and less likely to fall into the criminal justice system. When you foster a child you have the opportunity to show a them what it means to love and be loved, which can break a damaging cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment.

You are needed

Let’s face it, there are far too many children in the foster care system today. We live in a world full of amazing opportunity, yet in our communities, there are thousands of children and young people that are living a life full of fear, confusion and disruption. Year after year the demand for foster carers increases, so you really are needed.

It’s a career that changes lives

Many people dream of having a job that they love and that is truly rewarding. Fostering a child allows you to do just this. As I’ve said above, money is not the reason people go into caring for a child, but the fact of the matter is that fostering can be very a full time job. So, if you’re in a job you’re not enjoying, why not look into starting a whole new career in which you can wake up every day knowing you are changing the life of someone forever?

Are you a foster parent? Or maybe you grew up in the care system? I’d love to hear from you and your experiences!
